Selamat Pagi (Good Morning), Bali!

Upon arriving in Ubud, Bali, we immediately felt a great sense of calm. Unlike the rest of Indonesia which is Muslim, the prominent religion in Bali is Hinduism. Everywhere you look you are reminded of the deep spirituality of the Balinese people.

Flight from Phuket to Bali

Our bungalow was located on the outskirts of town next to the monkey sanctuary.

Our pet frog for the week.  This little guy didn't move from the secluded corner of our porch the entire week.

The women are responsible for placing the offerings on the pelinggih (shrine) three times per day.  Offerings include rice, flowers, and crackers.  The women place the offerings, light incense, and sprinkle water on the shrine with flowers.

Ganesha (Ganesh) - the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings.  He is also the patron of arts, sciences, intellect, and wisdom.

Tea on the porch

Every afternoon we were brought tea and Pisang Goreng (fried bananas) to our porch. Our favorite topping was caramelized palm sugar, Gula Bali.

*Marsha... you were right; the fried bananas are amazing!

We were taken back when one day our bananas arrived covered in chocolate and sprinkled with grated cheese. Our taste buds were a bit confused, but we grew to love the flavor combination.

Breakfast on our porch.

In the morning, breakfast was served to us on the porch of our bungalow. We felt like royalty as we dined overlooking the beautiful courtyard. The most amazing part of it all is that our room, including breakfast and afternoon tea, was only twenty dollars a night.

  1. Jeff, Why does the shrine at your hotel look like it is wearing a yellow and white bathing suit?
